#SpookySzn is over and we’re moving full steam ahead into the more cheery, wholesome side of the holiday season. And with the holiday season comes lots and lots of holiday baking.

Fall baking is all about the spice. And if you’re looking for a quick + easy way to spice up your baked goods, look no further than these Homemade Cinnamon Baking Chips.

I’m sure you may be familiar with the Hershey’s brand cinnamon baking chips. Unfortunately, the store near me doesn’t keep very many of these in stock. And with everyone baking up sweets for their friends, families + coworkers, I’m even less likely to score a bag as we get closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I can’t think of a recipe more simple. With just 4 ingredients and 40 minutes, you’ll have tasty morsels full of cinnamon flavor and a house that smells amazing.

 

In a medium bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon.

 

Add the shortening and corn syrup and mix until a thick paste forms.

 

 

Pour the cinnamon mixture out onto a sheet pan lined with a silpat. You can also use parchment paper.

 

Press the cinnamon mixture to approximately 1/8 inch thick. I used my hands but you can also cover with parchment paper and use a rolling pin if you fancy like that.

 

Bake at 200 degrees F  until brown + bubbly, then allow to cool completely.

 

Using a bench scraper or a knife, cut 1/4 inch strips, then turn and repeat until you have little squares of cinnamon baking chips.

 

Break up the pieces until they are completely separated.

 

I used these cinnamon baking chips to make some Cinnamon Crunch Muffins. The recipe for those should be up within the next week or so.

The cinnamon baking chips are great but the best thing about this recipe is you can replace the cinnamon with any other spice. I’ll be making Pumpkin Spice Baking Chips this weekend since I’ve been dying for some Pumpkin Coffee Cake Muffins. I think they would be a great addition.

Homemade Cinnamon Baking Chips

These Homemade Cinnamon Baking Chips are a great way to add a burst of cinnamon flavor to your muffins, scones and other baked goods. Perfect for holiday baking!

Servings 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons shortening or unsalted butter room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees F.

  2. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon.

  3. Add the shortening or butter and corn syrup and mix until a thick paste forms.

  4. Pour the cinnamon mixture out onto a sheet pan lined with a silpat. You can also use parchment paper. Press to approximately 1/8 inch thick.

  5. Bake at for 30-35 minutes  until brown + bubbly, then allow to cool completely.

  6. Using a bench scraper or a knife, cut 1/4  inch squares for cookies and muffins. You can make them any size you want. Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place.
